Liquid Phase Filter Application:

ABI Technochem offers coconut based granular activated carbon filter media which can be used for removal of trace contaminants that occur in water and liquid streams.

Portrayal:

Liquid-phase Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) Adsorption is a treatment technology to remove contaminants from water. Water is pumped through one or more vessels containing activated carbon. Adsorption by activated carbon has a long history of use in treating municipal, industrial, and hazardous wastes.

The two most common reactor configurations for carbon adsorption systems are the fixed bed and the pulsed or moving bed. The fixed-bed configuration is the most widely used for adsorption from liquids. Pretreatment of streams for removal of suspended solids is an important design consideration. The thermal processing of carbon, often derived from ground coconut shells, creates small porous particles with a large internal surface area. This attribute makes it activated. The activated carbon attracts and adsorbs organic molecules as well as certain metal and inorganic molecules. Dissolved contaminants sorb onto the surfaces of the activated carbon. Water is passed through the vessels relatively quickly. When the concentration of contaminants in the water exiting the vessels exceeds a certain level, the carbon must be replaced. Spent carbon can be regenerated in place, removed and regenerated at an off-site facility, or most commonly, removed and disposed. If not removed suspended solids in a liquid stream may accumulate in the column, causing an increase in pressure drop. When the pressure drop becomes too high, the accumulated solids must be removed, for example, by backwashing. The solids removal process necessitates absorber downtime and may result in carbon loss and disruption of the mass transfer zone.

1. De-Chlorination of industrial process water.
GAC are efficiently used for water dechlorination in processes which require super chlorination as well as the removal of organic substances from the water.
2. Drinking and Portable water purification.
GAC are very well used in drinking and portable water purification which is very essential for our people.
3. Pre-Filtration in Reverse Osmosis System.
Reverse Osmosis is effective in eliminating or substantially reducing a very wide array of contaminants, and of all technologies used to treat drinking water in residential applications, it has the greatest range of contaminant removal. However, they are more susceptible to degradation by chlorine. So it is important that a reverse osmosis system include quality activated carbon pre-filters.
4.Removal of Trihalomethanes (THMS) and Methyl tertiary butyl ethers (MTBE).
The contamination of ground and surface water with MTBE and THMS is a rapidly growing problem. High-quality coconut shell activated carbon is the preferred adsorbent to remove MTBE from drinking water. It provides the high trace capacity and high retentivity needed to remove MTBE.
5.Pesticides and dissolved pollutants elimination.

Gold Recovery:

The ABI Technochem carbons have been processed for the recovery of gold in CIP/CIL systems. Steam Activated coconut shell Charcoal based Activated Carbon Granules has large pore volume which make it highly suitable for the recovery of Gold in Carbon Leach (CIL) and carbon in Pulp (CIP) Process. Carbon adsorbs gold complexes present at low concentrations. The efficiency of this process directly influences the gold recovery yield and consequently the profitability of the gold recovery operation. Most of the development and optimization work with carbon have been done empirically. The high attrition resistance of the carbon with low platelet makes the product an ideal carbon for gold producers. Vapour Phase Application:

ABI Technochem offers coconut based granular activated carbon filter media which can be applied in vapor phase applications for treatment of Hydrogen Sulphide, Sulphur Dioxide, Hydrogen Chloride, Nitrogen Oxide and other Acid Gases. Industrial process gas streams will often require purification to prevent the poisoning of down-stream catalysts or in order to meet specification requirements.

Portrayal:

Coconut shell activated carbon particle size and pore structure has been specifically designed to provide the best adsorption of impurities from vapor steam with the least flow resistance. Coconut shell activated carbon comes from coconut shells that have undergone a steam activation process to create its activated carbon form. Coconut shell carbon has mainly micro-pores to macro-pores and due to its unique distribution of pores diameter, it is very popular in the gas phase purification and potable water purification industries. Adsorption of organic contamination from the process gas takes place in deep packed bed columns of activated carbon, designed to meet the required gas purity and adsorption cycle times.

Advances over others

Coconut shell carbon is harder than granular coal based carbon. It also has lower attrition and higher yields when reactivated. It has a long life expectancy and superior removal efficiency.
